Introduction

It comes as no surprise so many people love ice cream. It has been around for a long time with its first version being invented in China in 200 BC. It is a food enjoyed on a global scale with numerous varieties surfacing around the world over time and its consumption certainly peaks during warmer weather.

Lee and Ruth are both addicted to ice cream and I have to admit I always remember growing up what a treat it was when my dad would take me to Dairy Queen.

This adventure brings us to Markham, ON and one of the Dairy Queen drive thru’s located there.

History

Dairy Queen is also a chain with a significant history.

The very first Dairy Queen restaurant was located in Joliet, IL. It was operated by Sherb Noble and opened on June 22, 1940. It served many varieties of frozen products but its cornerstone which remains today is its soft serve ice cream.

The soft serve recipe was developed by John “Grandpa” McCullough and his son Alex. They convinced their friend Sherb Noble to sell it and that is when things took off. John McCullough referred to the cow as the queen of the dairy business and that is how the name Dairy Queen originated.

Today there are over 6000 Dairy Queen restaurants worldwide. The first Canadian location opened in Estevan, SK in 1953. Another interesting fact is that the busiest location worldwide is located in Charlottetown, PE.

So on to our adventure in Markham and yes some of that irresistible ice cream.

The Facts

Arriving at the drive thru

Ok, so here are the facts and nothing but the facts. The site of this Dairy Queen adventure is located at 7708 Kennedy Road in Markham, ON.

It is located in a small plaza just south of 14th Avenue and easily accessible on the west side of Kennedy Road, although as mentioned in the video, some can be challenged when it comes to following arrows here. Although, I must admit that it just adds to the fun and adventure.

Ok, so on to the other facts. From our arrival to having our ice cream took just 8 minutes. I must say they got our order 100% correct too.

What’s the best part of ice cream? The fun of eating it. So let us get to the fun!

The Fun

Like my dad was, I am a fan of the chocolate dip cone and as mentioned earlier Ruth and Lee love their blizzards, a Dairy Queen menu item that came on the scene in 1985.

There are many Dairy Queen Blizzard flavours to choose from. Ruth’s favourites are the Oreo Cheesecake and the Reeses Pieces. This time she chose the Oreo Cheesecake which she describes as “Oreo Yumminess”.

Lee on the other hand is ok with any flavour that meets two criteria, it has chocolate and it has caramel. You remember for Lee there is no such thing as Too Much Caramel. On this visit he went with Coffee Crisp. He describes it as “Sweet”.

I went for the usual Chocolate Dip Cone. It call it a “Perfect Mix”.

This location has lots of parking so we enjoyed an irresistible ice cream tailgate party!
