Introduction

As the title says “Make No Mis Steak”! Although we will discuss many foods this adventure is about the steak. Many places make good steak. Places where the steak is melt in your mouth, absolutely to die for, no other place will do, well they are much harder to find.

I believe we are very blessed in Canada to have The Keg. Like for many, when you want steak, it is our go to place and yes no other will do. I don’t know if it is the spices, the cooking, the quality of the meat or all of the above but it is the only place we have found where the steak does just melt in your mouth and it is to die for!

History

The Keg Steak
Sirloin steak and twice baked potato

The Keg or more formally know as The Keg Steakhouse & Bar began as the The Keg ‘n Cleaver in 1971 with the first restaurant located in an industrial building in North Vancouver, BC.

It is considered by many to have been responsible for bringing casual fine dining to Canada. In its earlier days many of its restaurants involved restoring and refurbishing historical or heritage sites including train stations and many other historical sites.

The original owner was known for entering through the kitchen when visiting a location so he could mingle with all the staff. He was apparently a great listener.

He is known for being the first to introduce the concept of a salad bar to Canada. It is believed that price, youthful demographics and music lead to early success and having lineups outside while other restaurants struggled.

A tribute paid to the original owner at a BC Restaurant Hall of Fame awards event ended with 500 people raising a glass of Grand Marnier in his honour. The significance of Grand Marnier was that The Keg was once one of the largest purchasers of Grand Marnier in the world.

The Keg has undergone changes in ownership over time and is now owned by Recipe Unlimited(formerly Cara Operations).

The Facts

The Keg has grown over time to 100 locations and has restaurants in all but one province. Locations also exist in the US in Arizona, Colorado, Texas and Washington State.

The Keg that is near us on Leslie Street in Toronto re-opened to takeout only about a week ago. Father’s Day was a great occasion to celebrate with some steak.

We were able to order online from their takeout menu, then drive down to pick up our order(a 15 minute drive for us). Upon arriving it was a matter of checking in at the door. Once the order was ready it was brought out you.

The Fun

The Keg Salmon
Pistachio crusted salmon and garlic mashed potatoes

As usual the drive home was a battle to keep the food intact in the bag. Like in the restaurant the meals came with warm sourdough bread and whipped butter. The aroma of the bread was getting to us. Needless to say another battle ensued once home to get photos before everything was devoured.

Ruth likes salmon and went for the pistachio crusted salmon that is on their menu. She really enjoys it.

Although Ruth and Lee like the garlic mashed potatoes I went for another item on the menu that I really enjoy. It is the twice baked potato. It is very creamy with bacon bits.

Both Lee and I ordered steak of course. It is the whole point of the exercise. We really enjoy their sirloin. I usually go for the 6oz. but Lee gets the 8oz. I don’t know why but it seems to disappear from the plate just way too fast no matter what size you order. It does melt in your mouth, it is to die for and yes no other will do.
