Introduction
I was born and grew up in Victoria, BC. Being on the southwest coast of British Columbia, Victoria is flush with off the charts fish and chips places. Just a quick shout out to Barb’s Place if you are ever in Victoria. You will not be disappointed! This all does not come as any surprise as many say Victoria is more British than Britain, right down to the double decker buses, all the Union Jacks around and its namesake of course Queen Victoria.
After moving to Toronto, a city almost 20 times the population of Victoria, I discovered good Fish and Chip places are much fewer and farther in between. First off a shout out to The Boathouse in Belleville, ON. The whitefish is top notch! That being said today we are here to tell you all about My Place Fish and Chips so lets get this show on the road.
History
Tracking down history on My Place Fish and Chips I have to admit has been very challenging. There is not a lot of information on Google other than numerous favourable reviews of course.
As a result most of what we have been able to find out about its history has come via word of mouth from those that are native to the area.
The location has been a restaurant in the area since at least 1988 and prior to being My Place Fish and Chips it was previously Lighthouse Fish and Chips. While under the name Lighthouse the ownership was of Greek origin and the decor had a distinct Greek theme.
It was at some point in the early 2000’s that it was sold to new ownership and the name became My Place Fish and Chips. The decor now has a more British flavour to it with many wall hangings of British origin.
From what I am told the fish and chips have always been top notch, even while under the previous name Lighthouse.
Fast forward to today and it is a thriving and busy place even though it can only operate currently with either take out or delivery options. Under normal times there is also sit down dining.
So lets move on to our most recent visit.
The Facts
Ok so let us get the facts out of the way. My Place Fish and Chips is located at 2577 Victoria Park Avenue. It is located in a plaza that is easy to get into and there is usually lots of parking available.
So yesterday we left home and phoned in our order while on our way there, about a 10 minute drive. After arriving and going in to pick up the order it was clear we are not the only ones who seek out this place for fish and chips. There is no drive thru window. It was about a 10 minute wait and we were on our way and certainly on the inside everyone was keeping their social distance.
Ok, so onto the fun stuff and some photos of the food.
The Fun
Although inside boxes the fish and chips are wrapped in newsprint giving it a very retro vibe. Check it out. It does bring back memories of my earlier days in Victoria. Fish and Chips always came wrapped in paper for takeout. I don’t know how to describe it. It just has a unique or genuine feel to it.
Ok, so after 10 minutes drive home and NOT speeding despite our appetites growing as the aroma of fish and chips filled our mini van, we got upstairs and unpacked the bag. Do you know how hard it was to keep Ruth and Lee away from everything while I took the picture you see? I was able to fight them off but just barely.
The choice of fish that is used has a huge impact on the taste and My Place Fish and Chips definitely got this right choosing to use halibut. There is no other choice that tastes quite the same.
A picture is worth a thousand words so have a look. The fish with a thin crispy coating and the fries are done perfectly. It is noticeable in the taste.
What can I say. If I closed my eyes I could feel like I was back in Victoria again.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and we will go back again.

Love fish and chips and this looks delicious. And halibut seems like a great fish for this recipe. Thanks for sharing.
Halibut is always my favorite for fish & chips.
