Introduction
It is Takeout Wednesday(aka National Takeout Day) once again and this time we are visiting a small family owned restaurant in the Scarborough area of Toronto named Harry’s Drive In.
We decided to check out Harry’s Drive In on the recommendation from a family member, who resides in Western Canada, who had been there before.
He definitely did NOT steer us wrong. It is a small out of the way kind of place that you probably wouldn’t take notice of, but the food is exceptional.
We realized after getting there that it was directly across from where Lee had football practices a few years ago. After tasting the food we were kicking ourselves for not having checked it out back then.
It is a restaurant with some history too.
History
Harry’s Drive In has been around since 1954. It has a very retro vibe as it is unchanged from its original state and this is apparently how its original owner wanted it to be .
It is a family owned restaurant. Its original owner passed away around 7 years ago and his wife has taken over the family business since.
It continues to this day to follow its traditional menu and is known for its fresh burgers and its souvlaki.
So onto the facts and there are a few including an interesting twist.
The Facts
Harry’s Drive In is located at 2280 Lawrence Avenue East in the Scarborough area of Toronto. It is in a plaza at the northwest corner of Lawrence Avenue East and Kennedy Road. Although there is an entrance off of Kennedy Road the entrance off of Lawrence Avenue East puts you much closer to it in the plaza.
As we were driving up to it Ruth said “It looks busy”. With restaurants this is always a good sign. In addition as we were driving up to it, although there is lots of parking, it is apparent it is not a drive in. That is the twist I was talking about. It is actually take out with some indoor and outdoor seating.
It was around 6PM when we arrived and as Ruth had suggested it was busy. There was a steady stream of customers. Inside there was a team of 3 very friendly people who greeted us when we came in and immediately took our order. They did not write anything down. It was all done from memory and yes they got our order 100% correct. You could see they worked very hard and as a team while also, like I said, being very friendly. From the time we walked in until the time we walked out was under 15 minutes despite being busy. It was impressive.
On our way home the fun began.
The Fun
All I can say is this time I could not fight off Ruth and Lee. Food and drink was consumed in the car on the way home. OK maybe I had a bite too.
Lee had the Bacon Cheeseburger, Onion Rings and a Chocolate Shake. Ruth and I had the Chicken Souvlaki. Lee said his burger was top notch. Ruth and I loved the souvlaki. I have to say the chicken and the onion rings were heavenly!
The aroma definitely got to us this time. Like I said, it did not make it home untouched. If you go there you will forgive us I’m sure.
Will we go back? For sure!
You will have to excuse me now while I go back to the mini van to soak in some more of the aroma and daydream about our next visit.
