Introduction

Garlic Bread

As the title says this is “All About The Bread”!

Our newest adventure is for takeout at Jack Astor’s. Normally we eat in at Jack Astor’s but during current times we are going to try their takeout service for the first time.

Simply put you can not go to Jack Astor’s and not have the the garlic cheese bread. You just simply can’t. If it is not a rule, it should be. Nobody, and I mean nobody makes garlic cheese bread like Jack Astor’s.

When I first came to Ontario in 2003 to meet Ruth, one of the first restaurants she took me to was Jack Astor’s. I have to say when I first met Ruth I was hooked on her and after our meal at Jack Astor’s I was hooked on Jacks(as many call it) and their garlic cheese bread too.

History

On our way to Jack Astor’s

This coming November(2020) Jack Astor’s is coming up on it’s 30th anniversary.

Jack Astor’s history I believe is more about the evolution of it’s atmosphere and culture rather than just history facts and figures.

It evolved over time from a bar-like setting to a more casual and entertaining restaurant appealing to a much larger crowd of people including families.

The focus seems to be on fun, humor, fresh food in a high energy atmosphere all at reasonable prices. I have to say one distinguishing factor from other places is personality. Nowhere else has the personality that Jack Astor’s does and it seems to be constantly evolving to appeal to more and more people.

We visited the Shops At Don Mills location this time. Most recent statistics state that Jacks has 40 locations spread throughout Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia in Canada. There are also locations in Buffalo, NY and Cary, NC in the United States.

Time for the fun!

The Fun

Pad Thai

As mentioned earlier this was our first experience getting takeout from Jack Astor’s.

Normally we eat in at the restaurant. We love seeing all the humorous signs and art that fill the decor. We also take great interest at reading what is written on the serving staff’s t-shirts. There are lots of humorous sayings and it is my understanding that the staff are responsible for coming up with the saying that appears on their t-shirt. I did say Jacks has personality and that shines through with all of the staff.

With doing take out this time we phoned in our order and drove down to pick it up. It is about a 15 minute drive for us. When you arrive they are setup with the front door open and you can come pickup your order(all nicely packed) and pay at the door. It works well and is very convenient.

Steak Fajitas

In typical Jacks style, humor still prevails. On the outside of the bags it says “Stolen from Jack Astor’s”. One bag also has a blue sticker on it with the signature Jacks donkey that says “I’m cold” and the second has a red sticker with the donkey and says “I’m hot”. I will let you figure out which bag had the cold items and which had the hot items.

In case you are wondering we did have more than garlic cheese bread although I would be quite fine with making a meal just out of the bread.

Jacks does make great fajitas. Lee and I shared the steak fajitas. I do like the chicken fajitas by the way too. They are grilled with onion, red and green peppers and spices. They come with tortillas and different toppings like cheese, lettuce and salsa. I have to say they are tasty. Lee and I devoured them!

Ruth went for something different this time and tried the chicken pad thai. She thoroughly enjoyed it. She found it extremely tasty too.

We will definitely be going back again. It think it goes without saying but I will say it anyways.

More bread please!
